Top Products
Pros
- Two-in-one product saves time and effort - weeds and feed together.
- Controls a wide range of common lawn weeds, including hard-to-kill dandelion and clover.
- Feeds the grass to promote thickness and health, which helps prevent future weeds.
- Large coverage area of 4,000 sq ft per bag provides good value for money.
- Works well with Scotts spreaders for uniform distribution.
Cons
- Not suitable for St. Augustinegrass, Dichondra, Carpetgrass, or Bentgrass lawns.
- Requires specific application conditions (wet lawn, temps 60-90 F) which may limit timing.
- Limited to two applications per year, so heavy weed problems may need additional treatments.
The Scotts Turf Builder Weed and Feed5 is a combination weed killer and lawn fertilizer designed for homeowners who want to simplify their lawn care routine. Instead of applying separate products for weed control and feeding, this granular formula does both in one pass. It targets over 50 types of broadleaf weeds, including stubborn ones like dandelion, clover, plantain, and morningglory, while delivering nutrients to thicken and strengthen your grass. This product is ideal for lawns with grass types such as Bahiagrass, Bermudagrass, Bluegrass, Centipedegrass, Fescue, Ryegrass, and Zoysiagrass, but it should not be used on St. Augustinegrass (including Floratam), Dichondra, Carpetgrass, or Bentgrass.
The standout feature here is the dual action. By killing weeds and feeding the lawn simultaneously, you save time and ensure your grass gets the nutrition it needs to recover and fill in bare spots. The formulation helps crowd out future weeds by promoting dense growth. Coverage is generous with an 11.32 pound bag covering up to 4,000 square feet, which is enough for a typical suburban lawn. Application is straightforward using a Scotts spreader, which provides even distribution - just make sure to apply when the lawn is wet and daytime temperatures are consistently between 60 and 90 degrees F. You can treat up to twice per year, so for most lawns, one bag will last the season.
In terms of build quality, the granular form is easy to handle and store, and the bag dimensions (16.3 x 10.8 x 3 inches) are manageable. The product weight is listed as 0.5 pounds in the specifications, but this seems to be a data discrepancy - the actual product weight is 11.32 pounds as shown in the title. This is likely a label error, and the bag is indeed substantial. It's important to follow the label instructions carefully to avoid harming non-target grass types or over-applying during hot weather.
One drawback is that this product is not suitable for all grass types, especially St. Augustine, which is common in warm climates. Also, the application window (wet lawn, specific temperature range) can be tricky if you have unpredictable weather. Some users might wish for more than two applications per year, but the product's efficacy makes this less of an issue for maintenance.
Overall, the Scotts Turf Builder Weed and Feed5 is a reliable, all-in-one solution for weed control and lawn feeding. It delivers on its promises for the grass types it supports, and the convenience factor is high. If your lawn is compatible and you follow the instructions, this product can save you time and keep your yard looking healthy and weed-free. For most homeowners, it's a solid choice.
Pros
- Effectively kills broadleaf weeds like dandelion and clover within a week or two
- Combines weed control and fertilization in one step, saving time
- Easy to apply with a spreader and clear instructions for timing and watering
- Helps grass grow thicker and greener, reducing weed pressure over time
- Positive reviews from users with various grass types including fescue and bluegrass
Cons
- Not safe for St. Augustinegrass, Dichondra, Carpetgrass, or Bentgrass
- Some stubborn weeds like Japanese clover or dollarweed may take up to two weeks to fully die
- Requires precise timing (wet grass, no rain for 24 hours) for optimal performance
Scotts Turf Builder Weed and Feed3 is a dual-action granular product designed to kill existing broadleaf weeds and feed your lawn simultaneously. It targets over 50 weed species, including dandelion, clover, plantain, and purslane, while the fertilizer component helps grass thicken and crowd out future weeds. This makes it a convenient option for homeowners who want to simplify lawn care without juggling separate weed killer and fertilizer applications.
The standout feature is WeedGrip Technology, which helps the granules stick to wet weed leaves for better absorption. In real-world use, many reviewers report significant weed die-off within a week or two, especially on dandelions and clover. However, some tougher weeds like Japanese clover or dollarweed may take longer, and a second application may be needed for heavy infestations. The fertilizer also gives grass a noticeable green-up, which helps mask the bare spots left by removed weeds.
Design and build are straightforward: the granules come in a sturdy 14.29 lb bag that covers up to 5,000 sq ft. Application requires a spreader (Scotts recommended settings are provided) and the lawn must be wet from dew or watering. Avoid watering for 24 hours after application, and do not apply if rain is expected. It works on common grass types like fescue, Bermuda, bluegrass, and ryegrass, but it can cause temporary discoloration on some varieties. It is not approved for St. Augustinegrass, Dichondra, Carpetgrass, or Bentgrass.
Drawbacks include the need for precise application conditions and the fact that some stubborn weeds may resist a single treatment. Also, this product does not prevent future weeds on its own; it only kills existing ones while feeding the grass to make the lawn more competitive. For maximum weed control, you may need to follow up with a pre-emergent in early spring. Additionally, pets and people should stay off the lawn until dusts settle, which is standard for most weed and feed products.
Overall, Scotts Turf Builder Weed and Feed3 is a solid choice for homeowners looking for an effective all-in-one solution. It delivers on its promise to kill common broadleaf weeds while improving lawn health. For best results, apply in spring or early summer when weeds are actively growing, and follow the label instructions carefully. It earns a strong recommendation for those with compatible grass types who want a greener, weed-free lawn without extra steps.

- Weedgrip Technology catches weeds both above and below the surface
- Convenient all-in-one product reduces lawn care steps
- Feeds lawn to promote thick, healthy growth that naturally suppresses weeds

The Scotts Turf Builder Weed and Feed 3 is a comprehensive lawn treatment designed for homeowners who want to tackle stubborn weeds like dandelions and clover while simultaneously feeding their grass. This product covers up to 15,000 square feet, making it suitable for medium to large lawns. It's an all-in-one solution that saves you from having to apply separate weed killer and fertilizer, streamlining your lawn care routine.
Standout features include up to 2X more powerful control of dandelions and clover compared to Scotts previous formula. The Weedgrip Technology is a smart addition; it grabs weeds you can see and those lurking underground, ensuring a more thorough clean. The product also feeds your lawn to thicken it, which naturally crowds out future weeds. Scotts backs this with a satisfaction guarantee, so you can try it with confidence.
In terms of performance, this is Scotts most powerful weed and feed, so you can expect visible results on those tough, broadleaf weeds. The feeding component helps your grass recover and grow denser, which is a long-term strategy for weed prevention. The product is easy to apply with a standard spreader, but note the weight: at 43 pounds, the bag is heavy and may require some effort to transport and handle.
One potential drawback is that this formula specifically targets dandelions and clover. If your lawn has other weed types, you might need a different product. Also, as with any chemical treatment, you should follow application instructions carefully to avoid damage to sensitive grass varieties. Overapplication can lead to uneven results.
Overall, the Scotts Turf Builder Weed and Feed 3 is a solid choice for anyone dealing with persistent dandelions and clover. It combines powerful weed control with lawn feeding in one convenient step. If you have a large lawn and want a reliable, effective treatment backed by a guarantee, this product is worth considering. Just be prepared for the heavy bag.

Pros
- Fast application: covers a large area in just 10 minutes.
- Combines weed control with lawn feeding in one step.
- Reusable applicator is environmentally friendly and cost-effective.
- Clear bottle lets you monitor product usage easily.
- Compatible with multiple grass types.
Cons
- Only controls specific weeds listed on the label; may not handle all types.
- Requires a garden hose and may not be ideal for very small or irregularly shaped lawns.
- Refill bottles are sold separately, adding to the initial cost.
The Scotts Turf Builder Liquid Lawn Food Plus Weed Control is a convenient 2-in-1 spray that tackles two common lawn chores at once. Designed for homeowners who want a fast, no-fuss solution, this 32 oz bottle connects to your garden hose and covers up to 2,000 square feet in about 10 minutes. It's a solid pick if you're tired of mixing concentrates or spreading granular products, especially for small to medium-sized yards.
The formula targets broadleaf weeds like dandelions and clover while delivering nutrients to your grass. In practice, this dual action means you can knock out visible weeds and encourage thicker growth that naturally crowds out new invaders. The reusable applicator is a nice touch, cutting down on plastic waste compared to single-use bottles. Plus, the translucent design lets you see exactly how much product you're using, so there's no guesswork.
Build quality is typical for a hose-end sprayer: lightweight plastic that feels durable enough for seasonal use. The connection to the hose is straightforward, and the spray pattern covers a good width. Just be aware that this product works best when weeds are actively growing, so timing matters for the best results.
On the downside, the weed control list is limited to specific types, so if you're dealing with less common weeds or grassy weeds, you might need a different product. Also, the refill bottles are sold separately, which can add to the overall investment if you plan to use it regularly. And while the 10-minute claim is accurate for coverage, you'll still need to move the hose around, which could be a bit tedious on very large lawns.
Overall, the Scotts Turf Builder Liquid Lawn Food Plus Weed Control offers a practical, time-saving approach to lawn care. It's best for homeowners with common weed problems who want a quick, effective feed-and-weed solution without the hassle of mixing or measuring. Just check the weed list and your lawn size before buying.
Pros
- Controls a very wide range of common lawn weeds
- Works on contact, providing quick visible results
- Large coverage area per bag offers good value
- Simple to apply with a spreader
- From a reputable brand known for lawn care
Cons
- Not safe for all grass types like St. Augustine (Floratam), Dichondra, or Carpetgrass
- Granular form may require watering in for best activation, depending on conditions
- Results can vary based on weather and weed growth stage
Scotts Weed Control for Lawns is a granular weed killer designed to tackle over 200 different broadleaf weeds, making it a versatile option for homeowners who want a lush, weed-free lawn. It's perfect for those who have a mix of common invaders like dandelion, clover, dollarweed, and even poison ivy. If you have Bermuda, Kentucky bluegrass, or other common grass types, this product is a solid choice. However, it's important to avoid using it on sensitive lawns like St. Augustine (Floratam), Dichondra, or Carpetgrass, as it can damage them.
The standout feature is its ability to start working on contact, which means you'll see results quickly as it kills weeds down to the root. The granular format makes application straightforward with a standard spreader, and one bag covers 5,000 square feet. For best results, apply in spring or early fall when weeds are actively growing. It's a practical, no-fuss solution that fits into a regular lawn care routine.
Build quality is typical of a granular product: the bag is sturdy and resealable if you need to store it. The yellow color is just a marker to help you see where you've applied it, but it fades quickly. One potential drawback is that it's not suitable for all grass types, so you need to check your lawn's variety before use. Also, while it works on contact, some weeds may need a second application for complete control, especially if they're mature.
Overall, Scotts Weed Control for Lawns is a reliable, effective option for most lawns. It's easy to use, covers a large area, and tackles a huge range of weeds. Just be sure to read the label to ensure it's safe for your grass type. For a straightforward weed killer that delivers on its promises, this is a great buy.
Pros
- All-in-one formula simplifies lawn care and saves money compared to separate products.
- Effectively kills listed broadleaf weeds and prevents crabgrass before it starts.
- Feeds grass for healthier growth and a vibrant green color.
- Designed for even distribution with Scotts spreaders, reducing the risk of burning.
- Large coverage per bag reduces the number of applications needed for big yards.
Cons
- Will not kill existing crabgrass; it only prevents new growth from seeds.
- Requires watering after 24 hours, which can be inconvenient during dry spells.
- Not suitable for all grass types; always check compatibility before use.
Scotts Turf Builder Triple Action1 is a three-in-one granular lawn treatment designed for homeowners who want an efficient way to tackle weeds, prevent crabgrass, and feed their grass all at once. It is best applied in early spring when dandelions are actively growing and works on a wide range of common grass types including Bermuda, Fescue, Kentucky Bluegrass, and Zoysia.
The standout feature of this product is its convenience. Instead of spreading a weed killer, a crabgrass preventer, and a fertilizer separately, you get all three in one bag. It controls broadleaf weeds like dandelion, clover, and ground ivy while simultaneously stopping crabgrass from sprouting for up to four months. On top of that, the fertilizer promotes thick, green growth that helps your lawn resist future weed invasions.
Application is straightforward: use a Scotts spreader on a wet lawn, then water in the granules after 24 hours. The 33.94-pound bag covers 12,000 square feet, which is generous for most home lawns. The granules are easy to store and handle, and the bag includes clear instructions for setting your spreader correctly. One thing to note is that the product must be applied before crabgrass seeds germinate, so timing is important.
No product is perfect, and this one has a couple of honest limitations. It will not kill crabgrass that is already growing; it only prevents new crabgrass from emerging. Also, if you miss the watering requirement or apply to a dry lawn, results may suffer. Additionally, it is not recommended for certain grass varieties like St. Augustine or Bentgrass, so always check the label.
Overall, Scotts Turf Builder Triple Action1 is a solid choice for anyone looking for a simple, all-in-one spring lawn treatment. It delivers on its promises when used correctly, saves you time and money, and helps keep your lawn looking its best. If you have a medium to large lawn and value convenience over separate applications, this product is well worth considering.
Pros
- Convenient all-in-one product reduces the number of treatments needed.
- Effective against broadleaf weeds like clover and dandelion without harming the grass.
- Prevents crabgrass before it starts, saving you from a summer battle.
- Feeds the lawn simultaneously, so you don't have to schedule separate fertilizing.
- Easy to apply with a standard spreader and clear watering instructions.
Cons
- Will not kill existing crabgrass; only prevents new seeds from sprouting.
- Requires a Scotts spreader for even coverage, though other broadcast spreaders may work.
- Contains synthetic chemicals; not suitable for those seeking an organic lawn care option.
The Scotts Turf Builder Triple Action1 is a straightforward solution for homeowners who want to simplify their lawn care routine. This 3-in-1 product combines a fertilizer, a broadleaf weed killer, and a pre-emergent crabgrass preventer in one bag. It's designed for people who tend to skip steps or just want to get the job done without keeping track of multiple products. The formula works on common grass types like Bermudagrass, Kentucky Bluegrass, Tall Fescue, and Zoysiagrass, which covers most of the country.
The standout feature here is the time savings. Instead of fertilizing, then waiting to apply weed killer, then adding a crabgrass preventer later, you do it all at once. It controls weeds like dandelion, clover, and dollarweed while feeding the grass to encourage thick growth. The crabgrass prevention lasts four months, which covers the critical spring and early summer window. Users should note that it won't kill existing crabgrass - that requires a separate post-emergent product. But for stopping new crabgrass from germinating, it's effective.
Application requires a bit of planning: you need to put it down on a wet lawn (right after rain or watering) and then water it in again after 24 hours. This helps activate the weed killer and fertilizer. A Scotts spreader is recommended for even distribution, but any calibrated broadcast spreader should work. The bag covers 4,000 square feet, which is fine for average-sized suburban lots. For larger lawns, you'll need multiple bags.
One potential drawback is that this is a chemical product. If you prefer organic lawn care or have pets that graze on the grass, you might want to look elsewhere. Also, because it combines multiple actions, you're locked into a single schedule - you can't delay the fertilizer if your lawn doesn't need it yet. But for most people looking for a simple, effective spring treatment, this is a solid choice.
Overall, the Scotts Turf Builder Triple Action1 delivers on its promises. It kills common weeds, prevents crabgrass, and feeds the lawn, all in one pass. It's not perfect for every situation, but for the typical homeowner who wants a healthier lawn with less effort, it's a reliable product that works.
Size: 4,000 sq. ft.
Dimensions: 15 x 10 x 4 inches
Weight: 0.5 pounds (bag)
Product Group: Lawn & Patio
Binding: Lawn & Patio
Each bag covers 4,000 square feet when applied at the recommended rate. For larger lawns, purchase additional bags as needed.
Pros
- Combines weed prevention and fertilization in one product, saving time and money
- Does not harm new grass seedlings, unlike many other pre-emergent weed killers
- Proven results from thousands of positive customer reviews, with many noting faster, thicker grass growth
- Easy to spread evenly with any Scotts spreader, and the fine granules broadcast well
Cons
- Will not kill existing weeds; it only prevents new ones from sprouting
- Not suitable for warm-season grasses like Bermuda, St. Augustine, or Zoysia
- Over-application can turn grass white due to mesotrione content; careful spreading is necessary on existing turf
The Scotts Turf Builder Triple Action Built For Seeding is a smart choice for anyone starting a new lawn from seed or overseeding. It combines a pre-emergent weed preventer, a starter fertilizer, and a growth booster in one bag. This product is specifically formulated to work with grass seedlings, so you don't have to worry about stunting new growth while stopping weeds. It's designed for cool-season grasses like Kentucky Bluegrass, Tall Fescue, and Perennial Ryegrass, and should not be used on Bermuda or other warm-season types.
Customer reviews highlight real-world performance: many users see visible sprouting within a week and dense, weed-free growth in a month. The active ingredient mesotrione prevents weeds for up to six weeks while feeding the lawn. Customers also appreciate the convenience of a single application instead of separate products. However, a few caution that over-application on existing grass can cause temporary whitening. Following the spreader settings exactly is key.
Build quality is typical for Scotts – a sturdy bag with clear instructions. The fine granules allow even distribution, and the 4.3 lb size covers 1,000 sq ft. One downside is that it won't kill existing weeds, so you may need a post-emergent product later. Also, it requires consistent watering after application to activate the weed barrier and keep seeds moist.
Overall, for DIY homeowners establishing a new lawn from seed, this product delivers on its promises. It simplifies the process and yields impressive results when used correctly. Just be sure to choose the right grass type and apply at the recommended rate.
Pros
- Covers a large area (15,000 sq ft) with just one bag, great value for big lawns.
- Long-lasting feeding with continuous release for up to 8 weeks.
- Kills a broad spectrum of weeds (over 250 types) saving time and effort.
- Helps improve soil health and root development for a more resilient lawn.
- Promotes early spring green-up without excessive nitrogen burn.
Cons
- Not safe for St. Augustinegrass in Florida, dichondra, or carpetgrass, which may suffer serious injury.
- Zero customer reviews currently available, so real-world effectiveness is unverified.
- The 39-pound bag can be heavy to carry and spread evenly without a spreader.
The GreenView Weed & Feed is a comprehensive lawn care product designed for homeowners who want to simplify their yard maintenance. This 39-pound bag combines a powerful weed killer with a slow-release fertilizer, covering up to 15,000 square feet. It's a solid choice for those with large lawns who are tired of applying separate products for weed control and feeding, but you'll need to check that your grass type is compatible before use.
What makes this product stand out is its ability to kill over 250 types of common weeds, including stubborn ones like dandelions, clover, and plantain. The GreenSmart Enhanced Efficiency Fertilizer feeds your lawn consistently for up to 8 weeks, which means fewer applications and more time enjoying your yard. It also helps retain soil moisture, which is a huge plus during hot, dry summer months. If you're looking to build a deeper root system and get a faster green-up in spring, this formula delivers on those promises.
In terms of design, the bag is straightforward with clear application instructions. The pelletized formula is easy to spread with a standard broadcast or drop spreader. However, the 39-pound weight might be a bit cumbersome for some users, so having a sturdy spreader with a large hopper is recommended. There are no user reviews yet, so we can't speak to long-term results, but the ingredient list and technology look solid on paper.
The biggest drawback is the restriction on certain grass types. You absolutely cannot use this on St. Augustinegrass in Florida, dichondra, or carpetgrass, as it will cause serious lawn damage. Always double-check your grass type and local regulations. Also, because there are no customer ratings or feedback yet, you're relying solely on the manufacturer's claims.
Overall, the GreenView Weed & Feed is a well-rounded product for large lawns with compatible grass types. Its combination of broad spectrum weed control and extended feeding makes it a convenient, time-saving option. If you have a big yard and want a single solution that covers both weed killing and fertilization, this is worth trying. Just be sure to follow the precautions to avoid damaging sensitive grass.
Pros
- Combines weed killing, crabgrass control, and lawn feeding in one application.
- Long-lasting protection prevents weeds for up to 6 months.
- Kills over 200 weed types and large crabgrass effectively.
- Feeds lawn for up to 3 months, improving color and density.
- Covers a large area (4,000 sq ft) per bag, good value for the price.
Cons
- Requires a spreader for even application, which may be an extra expense if you don't own one.
- Granules need to be watered in after application to activate, adding a step to the process.
- May not be suitable for all grass types or climates; always check label compatibility.
BioAdvanced 5-in-1 Weed and Feed Granules offer a straightforward solution for homeowners who want to simplify lawn care. This product combines four proven weed killers with a balanced fertilizer, targeting over 200 types of weeds including dandelions, clovers, and black medic, while also killing large crabgrass. It is designed for use on established lawns and covers up to 4,000 square feet per 9.6 lb bag, making it a practical choice for medium to large yards.
One of the standout features is its ability to prevent new weeds from emerging for up to six months. The granules create a protective barrier in the soil that stops listed weeds before they sprout, reducing the need for frequent reapplications. Additionally, the fertilizer component feeds your lawn for up to three months, promoting thicker, greener grass. This dual-action approach saves time and effort compared to using separate weed killers and fertilizers.
In terms of performance, the product works even if weeds and crabgrass have already sprouted, which is a major convenience. Users can apply it in spring or early summer and expect to see crabgrass start turning purple within three days, signaling that the treatment is working. The granules are easy to apply with a broadcast or drop spreader, and watering after application helps activate the ingredients.
However, there are a few trade-offs. You will need a spreader for even distribution, which adds to the initial cost if you do not already own one. Also, the granules must be watered in, so you need to plan around rain or irrigation. As with any combination product, it may not be as tailored as separate treatments for specific weed problems, and it is always wise to check the label for compatibility with your grass type and local regulations.
Overall, BioAdvanced 5-in-1 Weed and Feed Granules deliver a convenient, all-in-one approach to lawn care. They effectively kill weeds, prevent new growth, and nourish your grass, all in a single application. For homeowners looking to streamline their lawn maintenance without sacrificing results, this product is a solid choice.
Frequently Asked Questions
When should I apply a lawn fertilizer with weed control?
The best time to apply a weed-and-feed product is when weeds are actively growing and temperatures are consistently between 60°F and 90°F. For most cool-season grasses, this means early spring or fall. Warm-season lawns typically benefit from late spring applications. Always water the lawn lightly after application to help granules stick to weed leaves. For more timing advice, see our organic fertilizer guide for seasonal tips.
Can I use weed and feed on newly seeded lawns?
Most standard weed-and-feed products should not be used on newly seeded lawns because they can harm young grass seedlings. However, some products like Scotts Turf Builder Triple Action Built For Seeding are specifically designed for new grass and prevent weeds for up to six weeks without damaging tender blades. Always check the label before applying to a newly seeded area. For more on seed-starting, visit our Plant category.
Does the best lawn fertilizer with weed control kill all types of weeds?
No single product kills every weed. Most weed-and-feed fertilizers target broadleaf weeds like dandelion, clover, chickweed, and plantain. Some also control crabgrass, but not all. If you have grassy weeds or tough perennials, you may need a separate weed killer or a more targeted pre-emergent product. Check the product description to see which weeds are listed before buying.
Should I choose granular or liquid weed and feed?
Both forms work well, but they have tradeoffs. Granular weed-and-feed is easier to apply with a spreader and covers large areas quickly; it’s best for routine maintenance. Liquid formulas like Scotts Turf Builder Liquid Lawn Food Plus Weed Control are great for spot treatments or small lawns because they’re absorbed faster and give more precise coverage. Choose based on your lawn size and how much time you want to spend applying.
Can I use weed and feed on St. Augustine grass?
Most standard weed-and-feed products are not safe for St. Augustine grass (including Floratam) because they can cause serious discoloration or damage. If you have St. Augustine, look for a product specifically labeled for it, or use a separate fertilizer and spot-treat weeds with a safe herbicide. Always read the label’s grass tolerance list before applying. For more lawn care advice, browse our Garden Soil category for soil health tips.
